The
Donkey or Ass has a very long and colorful history that dates back thousands
of years. In America, the Donkey or Ass was associated with being a
Pack Mule or Burro used by the Prospector Mining for gold or silver.
They are nimble creatures that can maneuver mountain passes and survive
in desert landscapes. There are wild herds of Donkeys in the Desert
Southwest that come down into some of the tourist towns to be fed carrots
by the people that visit. Oatman Arizona is a place you can see them
daily as they come into town and roam about looking for handouts and
then heading back into the mountain foothills in the evening. They are
wild but people think they belong to the town which they do not.
According
to historic records, a supply ship to Christopher Columbus on his second
voyage brought the first donkeys to the New World in 1495. Four jacks
(males) and two jennies (females) were among the livestock delivered
to Hispaniola. From this few animals, an entire population was introduced
to this side of the world.
