Make
your own concrete mushrooms for the lawn, garden, or flower garden!
Using these molds you can make your own mushrooms to offset the fairies
and other fine creatures that may frequent your garden spot or yard.
This set lets you make as many assorted sizes you want by filling them
to the level you want. Not limited to being filled to the brim only.
You can use the edge of a trowel or edge of a board to make lines in
the bottom if you want them to show like the bottom of real mushrooms,
you can use your imagination to decorate the undersides to look however
you want them to.
You
can make strong stems to push into the lawn by purchasing 3/8"
rebar (available at most hardware and lumberyards already cut to 12
inches and as low as 35 cents apiece in some places) and you can hand
form concrete around it after pushing it into the mold filled with concrete
to form mushroom looking stems partly down (or up as you are molding
the part) so your mushroom will look even more real once it is placed
in your garden area or lawn. (You should always
wear gloves when working with concrete by hand)
You
may have to support the rebar standing up in the mold by taping it to
a simple frame of sticks or other support until the concrete hardens
in the molds. You should use a very dry mix of concrete that will hold
shape if you hand form it so you can make the stems.
You
can also use these molds to make edges for your garden or walkway, and
you can also turn them over and make bowls or planters by filling one
larger mold partially with concrete and then pressing a smaller one
into the middle of the larger one and forcing the concrete into a bowl
shape and letting it harden.
You
can also use this mold to make caps for stone or concrete fencing. Use
your imagination and see what you can do with these molds!Below
are a couple of photos of how we used our mushroom molds to make accents
for our garden and yard.
To make
this mushroom we mixed white concrete (very stiff and dry mix) with
a small amount of yellow colorant and and mixed up a very small amount
of dark gray concrete (in a plastic cup). As we started filling the
mold up we placed clumps of the dark concrete along the sides and continued
packing the mold. The spots are a result of doing that, so they are
not painted on and will last a lifetime. This casting will be durable
for centuries. In the garden we just raised it up on a tall rock that
had a flat surface on it. In the photo at bottom, we placed the mushroom
cap on a taller concrete hand formed stem next to the tree.
To give
the mushrooms a more rounded bottom edge, we simply used a wood rasp
to gently round the edge after it came out of the mold first thing the
next morning. We used a round file to get rid of any non smooth areas
left by the rasp and then used a 100 grit sand paper to lightly sand
the edge to finish it. No finish will be required for this casting because
we wanted a long durable casting that will never need to be painted
or clear coated.

One
last note: Every time we mix concrete
for any mold or project, we always keep a mushroom mold set around for
using up the last bit of concrete in. Because you always want to mix
a little more concrete than what the molds will take, the mushrooms
are one mold that doesn't have to be filled all the way up to make a
concrete casting that can be added to your décor or given away
or sold! A perfect way to use up every last bit of your concrete mix
without wasting it!
